Good health starts in the gut

Good health starting in the gut
Fasting has been used throughout the centuries as a means to cleanse the body, clear out impurities and allow your digestive system to take a break and is just as beneficial now as it was thousands of years ago.
Amchara’s guest blogger Joanna Foster agrees and has written a very timely blog for today on improving your gut health.
Joanna was one of three lucky winners that entered a recent competition Amchara ran with students and graduates from The College of Naturopathic Medicine.

Participants were invited to write a short blog that embodied Amchara’s principles on fasting and detoxification and were given the fantastic opportunity to win an internship at one of Amchara’s retreats.

So here is the first of the winning entries from Joanna Foster:

Good health starts in the gut

It seems like every week new studies and headlines are pointing towards gut health as being the cornerstone for healing conditions or reaching optimum wellness. From IBS to complex autoimmune conditions improving your gut health can bring benefits to your whole body. This isn’t actually a new idea, over 2000 years ago Hippocrates said ‘all disease begins in the gut’ and research in more recent times has confirmed he was definitely on to something!

How do you know if you have a problem?

Common digestive symptoms such as bloating, cramps, reactions to foods, irregular bowel movements and nutrient deficiencies can all be a sign of poor gut health but you don’t need to have these symptoms to indicate you have a problem. Digestive issues can also manifest in skin conditions, autoimmune illnesses and depression. Over 70% of our immune system is found in our digestive tract so the implications of good gut health can be incredibly beneficial for all round health and well being.

Be good to your gut

So if good gut health is so important what can you do to support your digestive system? There are two main elements to this; repairing the gut barrier and supporting your gut flora or ‘good bacteria’ to flourish. A more permeable or ‘leaky’ gut barrier can allow large protein molecules and toxins to pass into the bloodstream causing systemic inflammation throughout the body. Leaky gut is prevalent in modern society as stress, poor diet choices and environmental toxins can all cause damage to the delicate gut lining over time.

Give your gut a break

One of the best ways to repair the gut barrier is to rest the digestive system by fasting. This allows the body to carry out essential repair work on a cellular level, restoring the lining and reducing permeability. This break also de-stresses the system and can assist in weight loss as the body will switch to using your natural energy reserves. Intermittent fasting is a great way to reap the benefits of fasting and work it into your everyday life. You could follow the popular 5:2 method or do a daily 16 hour fast (mainly when you are asleep!) with an 8 hour eating window. It’s about finding what works for you.

Nourish your gut

Good gut flora is integral to good gut health, without doubt the two are closely linked – if you have leaky gut chances are you will also have poor gut bacteria. Why is this important? The body contains 10 times more bacteria than all the human cells in the entire body. The bacteria in the gut are essential for assisting with digestion and optimum absorption of nutrients so it is essential to have good gut flora. Removing sugar, processed foods, common allergens such as gluten and dairy as well as adding in fibre rich and nutrient dense vegetables and fermented foods will all contribute to a rich and varied gut flora. Supplementing with a probiotic will further bolster your efforts and a diet rich in pre-biotic foods such as onions, garlic and Jerusalem artichokes will ensure your good bacteria have a nutrient source.

Healthy gut, healthy body

Gut health is a great starting point for addressing many common health conditions and symptoms and is an integral part of working to improve overall health and well-being. Healing the gut barrier and supporting good bacteria to flourish are essential and using a functional approach to treatment will consider the body as a whole and support you on your journey to optimum wellness.

One stone lost and a beautiful retreat on the enchanting island of Gozo

Amchara Malta lived up to expectations and much more! It is a beautiful retreat on the enchanting island of Gozo, a short ferry ride from Malta.

I was on a 7 day juicing fast, the same as my UK juicing fast in March but this time it was in the sun!

I decided I need to practice what I preach so since my Amchara UK detox, I have adopted a much healthier diet and lifestyle lost a stone in weight in the process.

You don’t have to do the juicing fast at Amchara as I did, you can choose to stay there on their healthy raw diet or just juice by day and eat in the evening, it is up to you. You get a consultation on arrival where recommendations are made based on your needs and goals.

I tried out the Thyroflex – a thyroid function test, I suspected my thyroid was low and this proved it without a doubt, I will be writing about the test and my progress in treating this later. If you suspect you have thyroid problems – watch this space.

I also had refloxology, colonic irrigation and Intermittent Hypoxic Hyperoxic Therapy (IHHT) which improves the production of cellular energy and helps improve cardiovascular performance (used by many athletes).

If you are looking to detox, improve your health, lose weight or just want to stay at a fabulous retreat please visit the site here or click on the panel below and take advantage of a free treatment when you book through Live Blood London.

Detox Baths – 3 of the best for cleansing, soothing, relaxing and pain relief!

Detox Baths

Allowing our minds and bodies time to rest and rid themselves of toxins is essential to staying healthy.

Toxins are poisonous substances that negatively affect our health.

We are exposed to toxins via pollution, water, processed foods, chemicals, medications and pesticides every day.

When we don’t get rid of these toxins, our health is affected and we don’t feel as great as we should.

There is a great solution to getting rid of some of these toxins and that is – detox baths.

Detox Bath Benefits

One of the easiest and most relaxing ways to detox is through a detox bath.

Detox baths are so easy to prepare at home.

You can get all the benefits you’d find in an expensive spa at a fraction of the price and in the comfort of your own home.

Using essential oils, which provide antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory benefits, along with common household items like baking soda, Epsom salts and honey can help flush impurities from the body by allowing it to sweat out toxins.

Try these super detox bath recipes.

They will help your body get back into tip-top shape in no time.

Take about 40 minutes to an hour in a detox bath for best results.

The first 20 minutes will give your body time to remove toxins from your system while the last 20 to 40 minutes will allow you to absorb the minerals in the water and help you emerge from the bath feeling rejuvenated.

Make sure to use hot water — this will help you sweat out impurities.

Dry body brushing prior to bathing will help detox the lymphatic system.

Detox Bath Recipes

  1. Back Pain Detox Bath

Epsom salts are the staple of detox baths, they are also high in nourishing benefits.

Because of its high magnesium and sulphate contents, Epsom salts help relieve sore muscles and fight inflammation

Soak for 40mins to one hour, your body and mind will both thank you.

2. Ginger Detox Bath & Body Scrub

This super simple scrub recipe requires only fresh ginger, Epsom salts, and lemon, but it is powerful and will leave you with soft, silky skin!

Combine roughly chopped ginger and ½ cup Epsom salt in a food processor. Pulse a few times until the ginger is ground and combined. Add lemon juice and apply scrub before the detox bath.

For the detox bath – 2 cups Epsom salt, ¼ cup grated ginger and ¼ cup baking soda.

Add to hot water. The heat and the ginger will make you sweat and sweating is how the body eliminates toxins.

This detox bath will also help unclog your pores and relax the muscles.

Try sipping on ginger tea beforehand to really enhance the effects.

  1.   Lavender Soothing Detox Bath

Kathy B’s Success Story – A Blood Type Diet Success Story

Kathy B's Blood Type Diet Success Story

My husband and I started out on Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem, two programs that provided us with meals to eat and a regimen to follow. He was an investor in both so I figured they were worth a shot. Despite eating all the unpleasant food they gave us neither option helped us substantially. Our clothes might have been slightly less snug from time to time, but I didn’t feel any better. From there we hopped from fad diet to fad diet, never truly finding the right plan for us.kathy-b-success-story

By 1998 the spare tire I was carrying around my waist began to truly bother me. It seemed to grow faster than ever when I decided to switch from beef to chicken, the so-called lower calorie healthy meat of the time. I soon became unable to wear my own wedding rings and lost flexibility in my wrists as well. In July of the same year, I heard about the Blood Type Diet and approached it with the healthy skepticism I had developed from my negative experiences with other programs. But despite my doubts, I jumped into the Eat Right 4 Your Type book with eagerness and hope.

I found out that I was a Type B non-secretor and followed the guidelines for that type immediately. After two weeks of strictly following the diet, I lost a whopping five inches off the spare tire that had been plaguing me. I was hooked on the wonderful feeling and was thrilled to share it with my husband. But before I had the opportunity, he was pronounced dead on the eighteenth hole of a golf course during the middle of a match.

He was resuscitated in the ambulance and had to be constantly worked on at the hospital by a slew of doctors when he arrived. After six bypasses, the addition of a defibrillator and forty days in the hospital, he finally regained some semblance of health. During his trials I stayed by his side, constantly reading the Eat Right 4 Your Type book in the meantime. I studied every detail and continued to follow the diet during his struggle for survival. Despite the stress of the situation, I had energy and felt healthy because of the diet.

When we got home after the forty-day struggle, I put my ailing husband on the Blood Type Diet as well. Since he was Type A, I made sure to only give him the foods that were best for him and the changes in his overall wellness that followed were outstanding. The first check-in with the doctors evoked the same shock from each one who saw him. They said unanimously, “I cannot believe how good these tests look.”

Though my husband only lived for 5 more years after the incident, each and every moment after his collapse on the course was a gift. The Blood Type Diet not only prolonged his time on this Earth but added so much to his quality of life as well. He was able to play golf again, travel all over the world with me, and enjoy himself because of it.

My journey with the Blood Type Diet still hasn’t stopped. I continue to explore the depths of my own body’s chemistry by exploring the genotyping that Dr. Peter D’Adamo suggests for people who strive for an even more personalized look at their health. I’ve been passing the knowledge to everyone around me as well. While selling vitamins for a corporation in 1999, myself and the people working there ran experiments that tested some of the “Avoid” and “Beneficial” foods for each type. While on beneficial, everyone lost weight. After three weeks of eating only avoid foods the people who participated gained significant weight and felt horribly sluggish. These moments proved to me beyond the shadow of a doubt that you can truly harm your body by eating the wrong foods.

At this point of my life, I am healthy, vibrant and happy. My family, including my grandchildren and even my great-grandson all follow the diet to a “T” and all share the same vitality. I can’t thank Dr. D’Adamo enough for all he has done for me personally and those around me. I will continue to share the benefits of this program so even more people can see the startlingly positive results I have.

Detox – 5 Steps for Making Sure You Drink Enough Water During Your Detox

Measuring Tape and Glass of Water

A natural detoxification means consuming food and fluids which are natural and plentiful. Your detox can be aimed at getting rid of toxins and/or losing weight.

Drinking plenty of water is an important part of detoxing.

Even though the advantages of drinking water is a known fact, many people find it difficult to drink 8 glasses of water every day.

Here are 5 ways to get your required water consumption for a natural detox.

  1. Make it a rule to drink at least 3 glasses of water in the morning before breakfast. This way you know you are at least getting a good amount of water into your system for the day ahead. This is a good habit to get into and helps if you forget to drink water during the day.

Drinking Bottled Water

  1. Carrying a water bottle with you everywhere you go is a good way to encourage you to drink throughout the day. Every little sip adds up so don’t worry about consuming the whole bottle at the same time.
  2. If you find it really difficult to drink water and just don’t get thirsty, consider adding some natural fruit flavour to make it more palatable. Be careful about sugar content.
  3. Drinking good quality herbal teas such as green tea will also have a detoxifying effect and provide hydration.
  4. Make it another rule to drink as much water as you can before you sleep, this will remind you if you have not been drinking enough throughout the day and make up the shortfall.

Experts say -The lack of ventilation in homes is a major cause of indoor air pollution.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air pollution is two to five times worse than outdoor air pollution. And the at-home version can cause or aggravate asthma and allergies, which are on the rise in the United States.

You can wipe out mold, smoke, dust, and other invisible health hazards that have been trapped in your home all winter. Here’s how:

flame-fire-oven-light-77502

Gas and fumes from cookers, stoves & ovens

With every meal that you cook, your kitchen gets polluted with a little bit of smoke, soot, and possibly carbon monoxide (if you own a gas stove or range).

Inhaling high levels of carbon monoxide in your home can be fatal; being exposed to even low levels can cause fatigue, headaches, disorientation, dizziness, nausea, and other flu-like symptoms.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 15,000 people go to the emergency room each year due to non-fatal CO poisoning.

Your Detox Duties:

Check your burners: If flames are yellow-tipped, that may mean your stove is releasing too much CO. Call your manufacturer to find out if your burners should be readjusted.

If you don’t have one already, install an exhaust hood vented to the outdoors.

If you do have an exhaust fan, clean it.

Install a detector

pesticides

Chemical fumes emitted by certain cleaning products

These can also cause health problems like eye, nose, and throat irritation, lung damage

To reduce exposure to irritating fumes, cut back on your use of cleaning products and look for natural cleaning products from your health food shop.

  •    Pesticides, insecticides and herbicides are a part of everyday life, however many who use these products are unaware of their consequences on the environment and personal health.
  •    Fortunately, these chemicals are not necessary to keep pests away. Throw out all of those toxic cleaning products and replace them with fewer, safer products
  •    Some natural products used to deter and kill pests you might find in your very own pantry; like garlic, lemon, eucalyptus essential oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon oil.
  •    For beautiful smells, explore the use of aromatherapy in your home. You can add a few drops to liquid soaps, cleaning supplies or use a diffuser.
  •    Other natural insecticides and herbicides include pyrethrum (which comes from the chrysanthemum), rotenone (from the derris plant) and Diatomaceous Earth (from the remains of plankton).

mould

Mould

Besides being ultra-ugly and sometimes smelly, mould can trigger allergic reactions (watery  eyes, runny nose, coughing, and headaches).

Research shows that some strains of mould may be highly toxic.

Mould can be found in any place that’s excessively moist like rooms with damp, kitchens,  bathrooms and basements, where humidity levels tend to be high.

To put a stop to growth, you have to control the moisture level in your home.

  • Scrub grout with a mix of 1/4 cup liquid chlorine bleach and six cups water (use a stronger solution if necessary), and rinse. Remember to wear rubber gloves and keep the room well ventilated.
  • Clean both sides of rubber mats with the bleach solution above.
  • Put plastic shower curtains in the wash for five minutes on the gentle setting. If they’re mouldy, GHRI recommends adding 3/4 cup liquid chlorine bleach to the load.
  • Consider installing an exhaust fan that’s vented to the outside, if you don’t have one already. Ventilation is key to keeping bathrooms and kitchens dry and toxin-free.
  • Check cement walls (particularly near the floor, ceiling, and windows) and crawl spaces in the basement for mold. If you find patches, scrub them away with a stiff brush soaked in a solution of one cup liquid chlorine bleach and one gallon water. Do the same thing for painted walls.

control-dust-mite-and-pet-danderDust and dander

A buildup can cause flu like symptoms and respiratory problems.

  • Get your air conditioner ready for prime time. A well-maintained unit can help filter out some allergens — but if the filter, drip tray, or other parts are dirty, the AC may actually allow new allergens into the house.  Have a central air system? Replace your filter at least every three months; if you have the electrostatic kind, clean it regularly.
  • If you have a humidifier and dehumidifier, clean them as well.
  • Vacuum upholstery: Vacuum mattresses, flip, and vacuum again. If there’s a musty smell, wipe surfaces with a solution of one cup rubbing alcohol and one cup warm water. Wipe again with water only and let the bed dry.

Citrus fruits help the body by flushing out toxins and kick-starting your digestion with enzymatic processes improving digestion.

Lemon

Lemon juice facilitates in liver cleansing. To improve detoxification, start every morning with a glass of fresh lemon juice in warm lemon. Don’t forget, vitamin C is among the best detoxification vitamins around as it converts toxins into digestible material. Eat vitamin C foods frequently to help get more of these benefits. Lemon juice helps stimulate the liver into creating detoxification enzymes that help filter toxicity deposits from the digestive process.

Broccoli

Vegetables – Broccoli and sprouts which are full of antioxidants have the capability to stimulate the detoxification enzymes in the digestion tract Sprouts are actually more efficient than the fully grown vegetable.

Detox for Getting Rid of Parasites

Detox

By Earthworks health

The good news is that there are some natural treatments that are effective at helping the body detox and cleanse itself by killing and removing yeast and parasites. If you suspect that you have parasites or a yeast overgrowth, you might consider some of the treatments below:

what-is-detox

Dietary Adjustments– If you do have yeast or parasites, any sugars at all can feed an infestation and make removal very uncomfortable. If you are embarking on a natural detox or treatment for Candida, fungi or parasites, remove all sources of natural sugar from your diet, including sources like honey and fruits. Some Stevia is ok once in a while, but avoid anything that gives the body a sugar source and feeds yeast or parasites. Consider also avoiding dairy for 1-2 weeks to give your body a detox and boost.

Diatomaceous Earth– This is a naturally occurring substance that has amazing ability to kill parasites, yeast and parasite eggs. It is naturally high in silica, which is necessary for hair, nail and skin growth, and has other trace minerals as well. It can also help restore body tissue and improve digestion. If you decide to take this supplementally, start with 1 tsp per day in 8 ounces of water and work up to 1-2 TBSP a day until yeast symptoms disappear. Read the info below on Herxheimers reaction! Also, make sure to use food grade Diatomaceous earth!

Apple Cider Vinegar– Another easy and effective remedy for Candida and parasites. Apple Cider Vinegar is high in B-vitamins and very nourishing to the body. It helps the body’s pH neutralize and improves digestion. It is well known for killing yeast and improving skin condition. Some people are leery of vinegar, as a fermented product, when they have a yeast infection. While some fermented products like beer and wine can feed yeast, Apple Cider Vinegar undergoes a much different fermentation process and produces a completely different reaction in the body. It tastes awful, but after taking it for a while, you will become more tolerant of the taste, and your body will start to crave it. Start with 1 tsp up to 3 times a day about 30 minutes before each meal (some people can’t handle it before breakfast!). If you handle this well, this dosage can be increased to a tablespoon.

apple cider vinegar

Probiotics– Probiotics restore the helpful gut bacteria that is wiped out by yeast or parasites (or antibiotic or oral contraceptive use). Probiotics are necessary to restore proper intestinal flora, even after yeast and parasites have been removed. A high-quality probiotic supplement should be included, taken according to product instruction. Do not take probiotics within an hour of Apple Cider Vinegar or Diatomaceous Earth! You might also consider drinks like Kombucha and Water Kefir to help build up probiotic levels, or organic, whole, plain, full-fat yogurt.

Cinnamon– Cinnamon is a natural remedy for parasites and fungus. Take ½ tsp of a high-quality cinnamon powder in water up to three times a day.

cinnamon

Vitamin C– Besides being an excellent antioxidant and immune support, Vitamin C is helpful in yeast/parasite removal. If you have symptoms of yeast and parasites, take 5,000 mg (5 grams) per day spread out in 2-3 doses. Do not take vitamin C at the same time as calcium/magnesium as they will neutralize each other. High consumption of Vitamin C may cause loose bowel movements, especially when yeast and parasites are being removed. This is not necessarily worrisome, but if it bothers you, adjust the dose down until symptoms go away.

vitamin c

Coconut Oil– Coconut Oil is naturally anti-fungal and very nourishing to the body. Hopefully, you are using it in your cooking by now, but consider taking several tablespoons a day additional as an anti-fungal support. This will also help support the hormones and reproductive system. To make it easier to take, dissolve a couple tablespoons in a hot tea of choice and drink. The first couple sips will be coconut oil, and then you will just taste the tea.

Garlic– To help remove yeast and parasites, finely mince 1-2 cloves and drink in a cup of water before meals.

coconut-oil-and-garlic-juice

Olive Oil– Also an anti-fungal that supports the removal of parasite and yeast waste. Add 1-2 TBSP or more to salads or veggies, or take supplementally.

Other Herbs are known to help with yeast and parasites: Oregano Oil, Thyme, Peppermint, Rosemary, Olive Leaf Extract and Grapefruit Seed Extract. If you have a severe case of yeast or parasites, consider using any of these potent herbs, but do your research first!

olive oil

Sweat– As your body kills off parasites and yeast, their by-products must be removed from the body, along with the toxins that they might have bound themselves to. Some of these are best removed through the sweat glands, so let your body sweat by exercising, taking cayenne supplements and getting in hot tubs or saunas during the healing process.

sweat

Herxheimer’s Reaction

I mentioned above that removal of yeast and parasites can be uncomfortable at times. This reaction, named after the German dermatologist who discovered it, is basically the discomfort caused by the die off of yeast and parasites and the body’s attempt to remove them. The faster you attempt to treat symptoms and the more potent remedies you take, the higher your chance of experiencing this reaction.

It is best to be on an anti-yeast/parasite diet for several weeks before starting supplements to help minimize this reaction. Starting with small doses of Apple Cider Vinegar and Diatomaceous Earth and then working up will also help keep die off symptoms at bay.

You may even find that you “catch a cold” a week or so after starting to treat your yeast and parasite symptoms. This is actually a mild Herxheimer reaction, and backing down supplements and drinking more water should help it pass quickly.

Other Important Notes

Removing yeast and parasites is a difficult job for your body. During this process, it is highly important that you support your body as much as possible with regular exercise, good diet, adequate sleep, and limiting exposure to toxins.

Soaking in an Epsom salt bath (1/2 cup Epsom salts in hot bath water) will also help remove toxins from the skin. Drinking enough water will help flush die off toxins out faster, and adequate sleep will give the body enough time to regenerate.

During this time, it is also vitally important that you do not consume sugar or carbs, as this will make the process much slower and much more uncomfortable. Consuming enough raw vegetables during this time will also help keep your energy levels up and clean the body faster.

A grain-free and sugar-free diet are vital in removing yeast and parasites from the body.

For a good Parasite Cleanse – Paratrex from The Finchley Clinic -Paratrex 120 capsules
