Research by The Soil Association reveals the possible impact of the ‘toxic chemical cocktail’ put on our food
Farming in Britain has become increasingly dependent on chemicals – a potato is doused in 30 different ones
These chemicals are used to keep our food fresh longer but at the risk of stroke, heart attack and even cancer
All the pesticides used in the UK have been approved for use after being scrutinised by scientific experts
Doing the family shop, you’ll probably feel virtuous as you fill up your trolley with healthy fruit and vegetables.
But worrying new research reveals that these wholesome foods have been treated with a complex mixture of pesticides to get them to your table in peak condition — and there may even be some residues of these chemicals left on the produce you buy.
On average, new research has found, a supermarket potato will have been doused with an astonishing 30 active ingredients (an active ingredient is the part of a substance or compound that produces its chemical or biological effect).
Compare that to 40 years ago — when a potato would have been treated with just 5.3 active ingredients — and you start to see how mind-bogglingly dependent farming in Britain today is on chemicals.
A supermarket potato is doused with an astonishing 30 active chemical ingredients, compared to 40 years ago when a potato would have been treated with just 5.3
The Soil Association research is based on four decades of Government data and has thrown up all sorts of worrying facts.
For example, it found a leek or an onion bought in 2014 was treated with 32.6 active ingredients on average, compared to 1.8 in 1974. Wheat — ground into flour and used in everything from bread to thickening ready-meal sauces — was treated with just 1.7 active ingredients in 1974, rising to 20.7 in 2014.
The findings, presented at a recent Royal Society of Medicine conference, questioned what impact this ‘toxic cocktail’ of chemicals might have on humans, warning of links to various diseases including strokes, heart attacks and even cancer.
Pesticides are tested for safety and approved individually.
But if multiple chemicals are applied to different crops, then a consumer could be ingesting a mixture — the effects of which are unknown. The danger, some research suggests, is that taking a cocktail of chemicals could increase their potency.
‘People eat food sprayed with increasingly complex mixtures of pesticides, and no safety testing is done on mixtures,’ said Peter Melchett, policy director of the Soil Association, a food and farming charity which certifies organic food.
The group warns that regulation governing pesticides does not set safety levels for the cocktails of chemicals people eat, nor does it consider the impact of eating a succession of different pesticides.
It is a point echoed by Josie Cohen, of the Pesticide Action Network UK: ‘Mainstream agriculture in the UK looks less like farming and more like chemistry. The British public simply isn’t aware of how many different chemicals are being used to grow our food.’
Unsurprisingly, the agricultural industry reacted swiftly to counter the new claims. After all, it has long made much of the fact that the overall amount of pesticides used on British produce has declined dramatically.
In 1990 the total weight of pesticides applied to crops was 34.5 million kg, in 2015 it was 17.8 million — a 50 per cent reduction.
This, it is claimed, is down to advances in products and the fact they are more precisely applied, meaning that less of the chemical is required.
At the same time, it is argued that whatever crops may be exposed to in the fields, by the time they reach supermarket shelves they are safe to eat.
An independent advisory body, the Expert Committee on Pesticide Residues in Food (PRiF), oversees checks on food and drink for pesticide residues.
‘It’s correct to say the number of active ingredients available to farmers has increased over the past 40 years as a result of innovation, research and development,’ says Sarah Mukherjee, chief executive of the Crop Protection Association, which represents the pesticide industry.
‘But while the number of active ingredients has increased, the levels of residue found in the final produce remains low.
‘If you look at potatoes, the Soil Association claims an average of 30.8 active ingredients were applied to potatoes.
‘Yet the PRiF shows that in 2015, of 156 samples of potato, 73 samples contained no residues at all and only 31 contained residues of more than one pesticide.
‘That proves our point — even with a supposed average of 30.8 active ingredients applied, most potatoes sold in our supermarkets contain residue from one pesticide and the highest number of residues found was three.’
Those found to contain residues were all below the Maximum Residue Level set by law. But for most consumers, any residue is too high.
As for the ‘cocktail effect’, this, too, is dismissed by the industry body. Ms Mukherjee says: ‘Every day we are exposed to numerous natural and man-made chemicals. It is impossible to predict all the combinations in all possible concentrations that could arise — let alone assess them all.’
Such arguments are unlikely to convince some environmentalists who believe long-term exposure to pesticides could be linked to the development of cancers and other serious, chronic diseases.
Each year, a detailed record is kept of the amount of pesticides used nationally on individual crops. Would the National Farmers Union give us the details of one typical farm? Apparently not.
‘While all farmers will have their own spraying records, we don’t have access to them,’ said a spokesman. ‘Pesticides are a last resort for farmers when dealing with pests or disease.’
That may be the case. But some may wonder, if pesticides are being used so prudently on UK farms — and if each farm keeps a record — why is such information not more readily available?
But today, the Mail can reveal a comprehensive list of all the chemicals applied to a single crop of winter wheat during one growing season.
During that period, more than 20 chemicals were applied — a figure that closely matches the Soil Association’s findings.
The list was provided by a farmer in East Sussex to Professor Dave Goulson, a scientist and bee expert at the University of Sussex. The farm, which is not identified, is described as ‘not especially intensive, situated on the edge of the South Downs, an area of gentle hills, hedgerows and wooded valleys — beautiful, rural England.’
All the pesticides used in this country have been approved for use on crops having first been scrutinised by independent scientific experts. The product will have to have been shown to be effective and humane and to pose ‘no unacceptable risks’ to people, wildlife and the environment.
‘People eating small amounts of pesticide residues in their diet are not at risk, provided that intakes are below the safety limits that are set by expert committees when the pesticide is approved,’ advises the Food Standards Agency.
‘On the best science available, no harm will come to people who consume an amount of pesticide that is below the safety limits for that pesticide’.

Any TYPE OF CANCER occurs in the body when cells begin to multiply too quickly. These cells then form into masses and continue to grow at a rapid rate.
BLADDER CANCER is a TYPE OF CANCER that affects the balloon shaped organ in your pelvic cavity. The bladder is an essential part of your urinary tract system that stores urine until it can be excreted. Your bladder can hold up to two cups of urine – which may feel like a gallon if you’re frantically searching for a bathroom.
While most people know that smoking can cause lung cancer, few are aware that it’s a major risk factor for bladder cancer. Bladder cancer is relatively uncommon in the general population, but it does affect the elderly at a slightly higher rate.
Bladder Cancer Overview
The most common type of bladder cancer is known as transitional cell cancer. This TYPE OF CANCER begins in the innermost layer of the bladder and is almost always diagnosed in patients who are over 60.
This TYPE OF CANCER may also affect other organs in your urinary tract system. Since it targets the transitional cells of your urinary tract system, carcinomas may be found in the lining of your kidneys, urethra or ureters. Patients who are diagnosed with bladder cancer must have their entire urinary tract system examined for tumors.
The symptoms of transitional cell cancer of the bladder occur very early. Bladder cancer tends to progress slowly and manifests symptoms almost immediately after the cancer cells have arisen in the bladder.
Common symptoms include:
Blood in the urine
Back or pelvic pain.
Any of these symptoms may also be caused by a URINARY TRACT INFECTION, which needs to be addressed by a doctor. If your doctor suspects bladder cancer, he or she will conduct a full physical exam and test your urine for blood or abnormal cells.
Your doctor may also perform a cystoscopy test that allows him or her to visualize the inside of your bladder and take biopsies of any abnormal cells discovered.
Not surprisingly, the “allopathic” treatment options are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation (the “Big 3”). If I were diagnosed with ANYTYPE OF CANCER, I would NEVER choose this “cut, poison, burn” protocol. In my opinion, it is barbaric.
Fortunately, there are natural remedies that have proven to be very effective. Some of the best natural remedies include the following:
Green tea extract (catechins inhibit cancer growth)
Garlic (sulfur compounds block cancer cells)
Citrus fruits (limonene is anti-cancer)
the Gerson Diet (lots of fresh juice and coffee enemas)
theBudwig Diet (electron-rich cottage cheese mixed with flax oil).
What Happens After Treatment?
After completing your treatment, the first thing you should do is take a good look at your lifestyle and diet to determine if you could be living healthier. Your diet plays a large role in keeping your health in check. With the right diet, you can boost your immune system, prevent chronic diseases and keep your cancer risks low.
Even though BLADDER CANCER is easily treated, it is also known to reoccur in many patients. It is essential that you eat A HEALTHY DIET and exercise frequently once you go into remission.
A HEALTHY DIET includes a variety of fruits and vegetables (organic, if possible), grass-fed lean meats, organic dairy products, and healthy fats like coconut oil and olive oil. By eating a diet that is colorful and fresh, you will consume high concentrations of antioxidants and nutrients that can keep you healthy and strong.
Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine and you should feel better after your cancer than you did before you were diagnosed.
Breast Cancer Awareness month happens every October, which means the “Great Pink Push” is unleashed.
The cancer industry will shift into overdrive, urging women everywhere to get their mammogram screenings as they beg for cash donations for breast cancer research. All the while providing little in the way of practical preventative tips and tools that women can use to avoid this common form of cancer.
As an informed, health-savvy individual, you probably want to know what signs that you have breast cancer you need to be on the lookout for, in order to nip breast cancer in the bud. Instead of having to deal with the weight of a breast cancer diagnosis after it’s progressed – which hopefully will never happen! We’ve compiled a list of five early warning breast cancer signs, most of which are rarely talked about in the media. Learn these breast cancer symptoms and signs as part of your preventative arsenal to stay ahead of the game.
Early Signs of Breast Cancer in Women: Don’t Just Look for Breast Lumps
The most common way that conventional doctors look for the first signs of breast cancer in women is to identify lumps in the breast. They most often do this with mammogram x-rays. This offer physicians a basic roadmap for navigating the terrain of breast tissue, which they believe allows them to pinpoint any lumps, masses, or other warning signs of breast cancer that might point to a malignancy.
But mammograms can be a potential cause of cancer due to the ionizing radiation they send into breast tissue. They also aren’t accurate 100 percent of the time, despite what you may have been told. Lumps and masses in breast tissue can be either benign (harmless) or malignant (cancerous), and mammograms don’t differentiate between the two. This often leads to false diagnoses and unnecessary treatments with chemotherapy and radiation.
A better option, if you choose to undergo routine cancer screenings, is thermography. This unique screening method allows doctors to not only look for unusual lumps or growths, but look for other breast cancer symptoms in women. This can include identifying whether or not angiogenesis is taking place within the breast tissue, which is a much stronger and more accurate indicator that breast cancer may be present.
Angiogenesis is a fancy way of saying new blood vessel growth, which may reveal that a woman’s body is trying to build a new supply system for blood to be delivered to developing breast tumors. Doctors who specialize in examining thermography images will be able to identify whether or not angiogenesis is taking place, and suggest a proper course of action.
Other possible symptoms of breast cancer include:
Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no distinct lump is felt)
Skin irritation or dimpling
Breast or nipple pain
Nipple retraction (turning inward)
Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin
Nipple discharge (other than breast milk)
Your Hormones and Cellular Health
A lot of health experts like to talk about breast cancer as something that results from “bad genetics,” being passed down from mothers to their daughters. This implies that breast cancer can’t be avoided and occurs as an unfortunate “luck of the draw” type scenario. And depending on the type of breast cancer they’re talking about, there may be some merit to this popular theory.
But most types of breast cancer are a result of environment, diet, and lifestyle, all of which dictate how a woman’s endocrine system produces and balances hormones. In other words, hormone imbalance plays a much greater role in determining breast cancer risk than many people think. Thermography can help qualified physicians determine whether or not a woman has an elevated breast cancer risk due to this often overlooked early indicator.
Know the Breast Cancer Signs
Every woman’s body has a unique ebb and flow, and getting in tune with your own personal rhythm is invaluable for becoming aware of signs you have cancer. Paying close attention to any unusual changes that might be occurring, especially within breast tissue, is critical to avoiding breast cancer.
If you feel any unusual aches or pains in your breast, including occasional throbbing, pain, or even fluctuating discomfort, talk to your healthcare provider. Many women assume that only an isolated lump with localized pain suggests the presence of breast cancer. The truth is that breast cancer can manifest as “scattered, seed-like” tumors that, in some cases, spread like small tentacles throughout breast tissue.
Experts from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston warn that breast cancer often shows up without the classic breast cancer warning signs of lumps or redness. As mentioned above, other breast cancer symptoms in females can include swelling and irritation, dimpling, nipple discharge beyond normal lactation, nipple inversion, and/or a thickening and reddening of skin around the nipple. These are all potential early breast cancer signs you need to pay attention to in your body.
“There are breast cancers that present as half a lump or there may be no lump at all,” says Dr. Naoto Ueno, chief of Translational Breast Cancer Research at the Center, as quoted by CBS News. “It could just be a strange-looking skin appearance or skin being red or dimpled.”
Just be sure to look for patterns of change or any new and unusualsymptoms that occur outside the norm. Occasional aches and pains may not be early symptoms of breast cancer, but persistent itching, for instance, could point to fluid buildup, poor lymph function, or your body trying to create new blood vessels for breast tumors.
Can Back Pain Indicate Breast Tumor Development?
Upper back pain that feels as though it’s coming from deep within the bones may be an early sign of breast cancer. But don’t assume that every occasional bout of soreness or back pain you notice means you’re becoming the next statistic! Chronic back pain that doesn’t relent with stretching, chiropractic, or other means may be a sign that breast cancer tumors are forming.
Sometimes when tumors are developing in a woman’s breast, they put pressure on the ribs and spine causing new found and persistent pain. You need to be aware of any changes that occur in your spinal column, upper back, and even neck. Talk to your doctor if you feel as though the pain you’re experiencing is unusually pronounced and marked by pressure from a possible internal growth.
Nutrient Deficiency and Breast Cancer
If you’re not getting enough of the right nutrients in your diet, including vitamin D and iodine, your risk of developing breast cancer is already elevated. Nutrient deficiency is endemic in the West. Many people don’t realize that what they’re not eating is increasingly their likelihood of developing chronic health conditions such as breast cancer.
Nearly 75% of the adult “healthy” population is deficient in iodine, which has been shown to help ward off cancer cells in the breast and elsewhere throughout the body. Vitamin D deficiency is another one of the risk factors in breast cancer. A 2012 study published in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism revealed that low vitamin D levels are a hallmark in women with breast cancer. Other studies show similar findings.
A good rule of thumb in today’s nutrient-depleted world is to supplement with these and other cancer-fighting nutrients such as selenium and zinc. You may also wish to consult with a trained naturopath or integrative doctor. They can help you identify any specific nutrient deficiencies you might have and help you optimize your unique biological “terrain” for the very best breast cancer prevention.
Big Pharma has another dirty secret that mainstream media is intentionally keeping from you. Nope, it’s not another pharmaceutical class-action lawsuit for killing and maiming thousands. Nor is it the suppression or intentional sabotage of a natural substance for the treatment of cancer. This is something that is every parent’s horrifying nightmare… especially a parent who is well educated in natural and alternative health.
Imagine, just for a moment, that you get the devastating news that your 10-year-old son has been diagnosed with cancer. As a good parent, you want to learn as much as possible about treatment options and you immediately scour the web for information. In your research, you see that chemotherapy is the standard of care. You also see that chemotherapy is toxic and that it is actually carcinogenic.
You then read some of chemotherapy’s short-term effects: loss of appetite, mouth sores, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, and so on. In addition, you read the potential long term effects of chemotherapy: damage to the heart, reproductive organs, kidneys, bladder, nervous system, lungs, and more. You also see there is about a 20%, five-year survival rate for your child’s cancer using chemotherapy.
Through your investigation, you find that there are many different natural and non-toxic treatment options. Some of them sound promising. You decide to research cancer centers that use these treatments and call a few to ask questions. You choose one and make an appointment for a week from then.
In the meantime, you call the oncologist’s office, tell them you’ve chosen a different route and that you won’t be coming for your son’s appointment. You hang up feeling good about your decision.
The Role of Child Protective Services in Medical Kidnapping
Three days later Child Protective Services (CPS) shows up at your door. They say they need to take custody of your child. As they are leaving with your son, you are in total disbelief, crying and yelling at them as your 10-year-old is screaming your name for help, asking what is happening. Your child has been taken away from you. The state’s CPS has literally kidnapped him to force your son to do conventional chemotherapy against your will.
Absolutely insane… right?
The reality is that this scene is not from a movie and it is not a bad dream. Sadly, this is happening today in the United States of America, and it’s legal. What’s more, it’s intentionally being hidden from you by the U.S. mainstream media – Fox, CNN, CBS, ABC, you name it. Medical kidnapping, as it is called, is another way that Big Pharma exerts their enormous power and is another one of their dirty secrets that the mainstream media doesn’t report.
A Real Medical Kidnapping in Action
Tonya Brown was faced with difficult decisions for her son Christopher after he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), an extremely rare form of cancer in children. The overseeing physician at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Dr. Jessica Boklan, recommended 12 weeks of oral chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow transplant.
As with many mainstream doctors recommending these treatments, there is often pressure to begin immediately. Tonya agreed to the chemotherapy, but had reservations about the bone marrow transplant due to the fact that the transplant was coming from an unmatched donor and the success rate was less than 20%. In addition to the low success rate, these procedures are excruciatingly painful.
According to Health Impact News:
“Christopher responded better than many to the chemo treatments, but still they made him very sick. He begged his mother to stop making him take the chemo.
As the time approached for the bone marrow transplant, Tonya made the decision to have Christopher delay going through the treatment, and what others had described as agonizing pain associated with the procedure, until they tried other, less invasive options first. She wanted the perilous bone marrow transplant to be the last resort.
After 10 weeks of chemotherapy, Tonya stopped the treatment. At home, she began juicing and treating him with a strict diet that has been recommended for cancer. She used nutritional therapies and they prayed and believed God for healing.”
Eighteen months later, Child Protective Services paid an unexpected visit to Brown’s house (reportedly ordered by Dr. Boklan) to find a healthy child with lots of energy. Upon taking Christopher back to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, CPS was waiting. Christopher was ordered to begin another round of chemotherapy that day. Tonya’s request for a second opinion was denied on the spot and, under duress, she reluctantly agreed to another round of chemotherapy for her son.
After 20 days, Tonya was ordered to leave the hospital as her 8-year-old child was taken from her custody. It was at this point that the CPS stepped in, Christopher became a ward of the state, and the bone marrow transplant proceeded against Tonya’s will.
It was later discovered that Dr. Jessica Boklan considers herself (from her own testimony in court), to be the world’s leading authority on chronic myeloid leukemia − Christopher’s type of cancer. She has co-authored and is conducting numerous research studies involving children, cancer, and experimental drugs. The question seems obvious; might Christopher have been one of Dr. Boklan’s guinea pigs to further her research?
Is Big Pharma Really Allowed to Use Children as Guinea Pigs?
It is a fact that many pharmaceutical companies that make cancer drugs have been given the green light to research experimental therapies aimed at children with rare cancers. However, due to parental concerns, candidates are often hard to come by.
The pharmaceutical industry is one of the largest, most lucrative, and most powerful in the world; perhaps only dwarfed by the oil industry. This allows for virtually unlimited funding – payola incentives to doctors and agencies to get them trial participants. In the case of medical kidnapping by CPS, when children are removed from their parents, they become wards of the state. Once this designation is made, these children can legally be entered into experimental drug programs and essentially used as guinea pigs.
Too Much Power and Forced Gag Orders
The case of Tonya Brown’s son Christopher is one of many that revolves around children with rare forms of cancer being removed from their parents, only to begin experimental treatment against the parents’ wishes. It is important to also understand that children’s courts do not operate like normal courts. In fact, former Georgia State Senator, Nancy Shaffer described the Child Protective Services reach as “unlimited power.” Charges can be based on simple, unfounded statements, and documents are sealed from public scrutiny.
Along with losing custody of their children, it is customary for parents to be served with gag orders against making any of the information about the case public. It is because of those brave parents and journalists that go public against court orders that we are even able to hear about these cases at all. It is therefore impossible to truly know how widespread this situation has become. Judging by the heightened coverage of alternative media, and increasingly the mainstream media, what we are seeing may only be the tip of the iceberg.
Fortunately, Congress is listening and has enacted H.R. 4989, which states:
“To prohibit Federal funding of any treatment or research in which a ward of the State is subjected to greater than minimal risk to the individual’s health with no or minimal prospect of direct benefit.”
Even with this enacted bill that limits Federal funding, the anti-freedom trend of medical kidnapping is increasing and it’s essential that this insanity be exposed in order for it to be stopped! When a parent’s autonomy over treatments they decide to give their sick child is forcefully removed by government, it is time for the entire country to ask itself… “what kind of future are we allowing to emerge?”

I know a lot of you have cut wheat out of your diet already- well done you!
This is not easy, especially if like me you were brought up to believe that wheat is “The staff of life” and “Wholewheat & grains are healthy”
For those of you that haven’t yet cut wheat out or are not sure why they should – please, please read on!
Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health is written by the renowned cardiologist, Dr. William Davis. In my opinion the book has not been very aptly named, the title gives the impression of a need to lose weight around the middle that has been caused by wheat (as in a beer belly) when the book is really about the awful damage wheat is doing to our health. It really has to be read to be believed!
This book explains how eliminating wheat from our diets can result in HUGE health benefits (including weight loss).
Think about what you have been eating for the last twenty or thirty years.
If you are like many people, your main meals probably consisted of the following:
Toasted bread, bagel, biscuits – wheat flour
Croissant or pastry – wheat flour, sugar
Cereal – wheat or corn, sugar.
Pancakes/Waffles – wheat flour, sugar
Lunch & Snacks
Sandwich, wrap, rolls etc – primary ingredient is wheat flour, (look at labels)
Hambuger – primary ingredient is wheat flour, with a protein in between
Desserts, sweets, puddings, pastries, pies, sauces made with wheat
Cheese & biscuits – made of wheat flour.
Feed or Food?
It is not a stretch to suggest that up to fifty percent or more of what we have historically eaten was wheat, and perhaps up to seventy-five percent wheat and other grains.
When you look at it this way, what we thought of as “food” was more like “feed.”
In fact, at the time when humans adopted agriculture, the majority of grains were actually grown to feed livestock.
Perhaps in times of famine or desperation, humans raided their grain bins.
“Feed” in Disguise
This bad habit must have stuck.
10,000 years later we have morphed agriculture into a processed food industry where we take wheat, corn, and soy and either make it sweet with sugar or high fructose corn syrup, make it savoury with salt and spices.
Then we mould and press the feed mixture into the desired shape – thick or thin, short or long, big or little, round or square, soft or dense – choose a colour, and then add chemicals so it will last a year or more.
We fool ourselves into thinking this is food, but if we were honest, we have to admit this is more like how we feed our dogs.
The packages all look different, but pick any of these things and imagine if we all ate with our mouths open, we’d see it for what it is – just a mush of wheat or corn flour. They might as well just sell this feed in 50lb bags.
It’d be much more honest… and cheaper too.
Enter REAL FOOD
After decades of eating just a few crops, it’s no surprise that we have forgotten what REAL FOOD is, and people enlightened enough to reject the standard Western diet often struggle initially with determining what to eat.
In fact, many are too quick to substitute wheat with other things that are just like it. If you have decided to reject “feed as food,” consider exploring real food instead and letting the notion of real food serve as your litmus test before putting something in your mouth.
Ask yourself, “is this real food…or made with real food?”
We all enjoy our treats here and there, but imagine replacing that 75% “feed” in your diet with food! One of the joys of rejecting grains is a reintroduction to the so many things this planet provides us to eat.
With a little time, you’ll get the hang of it.
Wheat Belly has become a phenomenon that countless thousands of people are following.
In its simplest form, Wheat Belly is really about two things:
1) Eliminating wheat (and other gluten-containing grains such as barley and rye)
2) Managing carbohydrates/sugars to individual tolerance levels to manage blood sugar and promote good health weight-loss (if desired).
Wheat Belly isn’t really about being “gluten-free” the way most people understand that to be. There is much wrong with wheat of which gluten is only a part.
We strongly recommend that people avoid gluten-free foods made with other high-carbohydrate grains, because that is inconsistent with achieving point #2!
Most people begin the way described above and for the first time in their lives see the stark causality between what they eat and the status of their health.
It can be quite an epiphany for people to eliminate a seemingly innocuous food and in a matter of a few days experience significant health benefits or begin rapid weight loss.
This initial experience changes people, and changes their attitude about and perception of food. Thus the journey begins!
Buy the book and see for yourself!
There are resources there to help you, an active Facebook page, and of course, Dr. Davis’ books and blog.
Most people find that committing to a period of 3-4 weeks is a sufficient trial period to understand just what Wheat Belly can do for them.
These appear as black points at the edge of the layer, or as a dark shore or waves.
Cause & Interventions:
Strongly indicative of heavy metal toxicity, this can be from the environment (pollution, contaminated food, water or air, smoking and passive smoking) and also amalgams.
Points at the edge of the layer usually indicate the presence of lead and/or amalgams.
Dark waves deeper into the layer indicate that metals are being held in the fatty tissues, brain and nervous system, which is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Possible symptoms include: Muscular pain and weakness, decreased cognitive function, poor memory and concentration, fatigue, sore/bleeding gums.
Chelation therapy, chlorella, selenium, and have amalgams removed professionally or replaced with non metal alternatives.
We’ve always known that life brings us in contact with a staggering number of chemicals, some of which are potentially dangerous in high doses. But we’ve never had a clear understanding about how many of those chemicals are actually making their way into our bodies—until now.
The Environmental Working Group just released a first-of-its-kind report on the chemical carcinogens found in people’s bodies. After compiling biomarker data, which measures chemical levels in the blood, urine, breast milk, and hair, the EWG detected up to 420 different potential carcinogens.
What the report means for you
Now, before you freak out, it’s important to realize that just because these chemicals may be in your body, it doesn’t mean they’re actively causing cancer.
Though there is a clear link between chemicals and disease (the World Health Organization estimates that as many as 19 percent of cancers are caused by environmental factors), the toxicity of the chemicals, the duration of exposure, and the body’s genetics all play a huge role. And the EWG estimates that only nine of the more than 400 carcinogens found were measured at levels high enough to pose nontrivial cancer risks.
How to reduce your risk
Carcinogens are present in everything from industrial products and pesticides to more natural sources like food and water, so not even the most Howard Hughes-est of germophobes stands a chance of completely dodging them.
However, certain simple lifestyle tweaks can help reduce your risk of exposure. We reached out to hormone expert Dr. Sara Gottfried to get her take on some of the report’s most widely found carcinogens and snag some of her tips on how to keep them out of your body.
1. Heavy metals
Heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead were among the most frequently detected carcinogens in the report, found in 90 percent of the participants. Industrial workers are especially vulnerable to heavy metal exposure, but trace metals are also present in drinking water and certain seafood. Metal molecules can disrupt the endocrine system and bind to DNA to cause mutations.
Pesticides from industrial farms can sneak into food and water sources, and traces of them were found in one-third to two-thirds of those surveyed in the EWG study.
The EWG advises choosing organic produce whenever possible, especially if you’re shopping for these 12 pesticide-heavy fruit and veggie varieties, and Dr. Gottfried recommends investing in a water purification system to nix pesticide contaminants from your tap.
Phthalates are synthetic chemicals found in certain plastics, beauty products, and pesticides. Known hormone disruptors, they’ve been tied to metabolism, fertility, and reproductive health issues.
The EWG recommends steering clear of all personal care and cleaning products that have the word “fragrance” on the ingredients list, since they often contain phthalates. Dr. Gottfried says to avoid plastic products that have the “3” recycling code molded on the bottom, for they also likely contain the chemical.
4. Bisphenol A (BPA)
Bisphenol A is another chemical that’s found in household plastics like water bottles and food can linings. It can disrupt the endocrine system and has been linked toobesity, diabetes, and endometriosis.
The EWG recommends opting for fresh food over canned whenever possible and avoiding plastics marked with “PC” (for polycarbonate) or “7” recycling codes. Dr. Gottfried suggests adding more probiotic-rich foods like yogurt and tempeh to your diet, as they’ve been shown to facilitate the removal of BPA from the body in animal studies.
What the report could mean for the country
The EWG released the review to advance research about how carcinogens drive disease and educate the public about the pervasiveness of chemicals in modern life.
“We thought that would be really valuable for researchers to see where the gaps are, and we also thought it would be valuable for individuals to understand the incredible amount of carcinogens in the world, where they’re coming from, and the ways in which they can reduce exposures,” Curt DellaValle, the study’s senior scientist, explained to mindbodygreen.
DellaValle also underlined the importance of federal policy in spurring real chemical reform.
“When we stopped using lead in paint, we saw a drastic decrease in people who had the chemical in their system. When PCBs were banned in America, we also saw a decrease in the amount that was detected in people,” he said. “I think that shows that when we pass effective policies, we can see really dramatic reductions in our chemical exposures.”
President Obama’s recent Moonshot Initiative aims to find a cure to cancer—a cure that the EWG and its President Ken Cook think could start before diagnosis.
“We should focus on preventing cancer by preventing human exposure to these chemicals,” he said in the report’s press release.
Fasting is not a new method but our ancestors would say they did not have much of a choice. It was just part of life in Palaeolithic times when food was scarce and people did not have the means to store huge amounts of food. The community were dependent on the luck and expertise of their hunters and gatherers. In ancient times however, cleansing and detoxing became more acknowledged and valued. Our ancestors already used methods, such as water fasts, enemas or saunas to detoxify their bodies.
In the 21st century, we face very different challenges; environmental pollution has risen to such heights that the detoxification capabilities of our bodies are challenged even more than before. (1) It is also important to consider additional factors like smoking and drinking alcohol on a regular basis. It should not come as a surprise that the most common way to put extra strain on the body is to consume foods high in sugar and simple carbohydrates.
The detoxification pathways
The way the body works is very efficient, if we use the right foods to fuel it. We have several organs involved in continuous detoxification, such as the liver, the kidneys, the gut, the lungs and the lymphatic system. The main role is played by the liver, which creates water-soluble substances that can be easily excreted from the body.
This happens in two phases: in the first phase, compounds are prepared for elimination via chemical reactions that can often transform them into more harmful substances. This step prepares the liver for the second phase, (the conjugation pathway) where these toxic substances are bound to other chemicals that render them harmless and ready for excretion.
It is imperative to note that patients with chronic illnesses can be made to feel worse during fasting because of an increase in circulating toxins in the body. Medical and naturopathic supervision is highly recommended to support clients and to avoid any potentially dangerous reactions. (2) Pregnant women and individuals with liver, kidney or heart arrhythmias should not fast.
But what is Diabetes?
After eating carbohydrates the body breaks them down into glucose. This is chased into the cells by a hormone produced in the pancreas called insulin. In a very simplistic way, diabetes means that the insulin receptors on the cells are unable to respond to the insulin and glucose is left circulating in the blood. Instead of creating stable blood sugar levels during food intake, glucose levels can fluctuate erratically, leading to sugar cravings and hunger.
The brain receives messages that it needs more food and this creates a vicious circle making it very hard for people even in a pre-diabetic state to lose and then maintain weight on their own. A very common body characteristic is fat around the middle, which can also increase the risk of other illnesses, such as heart disease, arthritis or depression.
To improve the life of someone with diabetes, it’s important to break this cycle by taking the strain off the insulin-producing cells. Studies prove that diet and lifestyle intervention can improve glucose tolerance and insulin resistance. (3)
Calorie restriction, intermittent fasting and alternate day fasting all seem to be great methods and depending on the patient’s condition and willingness, they might even be able to reduce or completely remove the need for medication. (3, 4)
Research (5), from Newcastle University has provided promising results on reversing type 2 diabetes, by reducing weight and therefore “reawakening” the insulin cells in the pancreas. This could give even more motivation to those with type 2 diabetes, wishing to avoid medication.
Identifying the individual detoxification pathways and understanding the environmental and lifestyle factors is crucial, in order to give personalised nutritional support and to reduce symptoms associated with metabolic toxicity.
