The Colon

The colon large intestine or bowel is situated in the abdominal region and forms the last part of the digestive tract. The colon is involved in the absorption of water, assimilation of nutrients and minerals, as well as the synthesis of vitamins. A major part of the excretory system, the colon eliminates food residue, drugs, heavy metals and other body wastes. This is supported by the billions of friendly bacteria which inhabit the colon and make up some 40 per cent of the dry weight of our faecal matter. The Treatment

Colonic hydrotherapy is a safe and gentle internal bath which allows warm filtered water into the colon through a small device called a Speculum. The speculum makes it possible to simultaneously bring clean water into the colon and carry waste out. The colon is alternatively filled with water and released for loose debris to be allowed to flow out. This process is carried out throughout the treatment, which lasts from 30 to 45 minutes. The result is a gentle flushing of the colon, and a loosening of old faecal debris.

Colonic irrigation effectively cleanses years of excess waste, pollutants and toxic substances. This process can also help rebalance the bowel flora by facilitating re-population of the stock of friendly bacteria.

Hygienic and odourless, the therapy is carried out in a private and relaxing environment.

The treatment will begin with your therapist taking a full case history, which will be confidential.

Your therapist will also use special massage techniques on the abdomen to stimulate the release of waste products and can also introduce herbs and/or Probiotic (friendly bacteria) implant to aid the process of detoxification and cleansing.

5 Health Tips for a Worry-Free Travel


Can I take my probiotics away with me?

We recommend that probiotic supplements are kept in the fridge to ensure they remain as effective as they can possibly be.  However, if they are of a high enough quality, they will remain stable out of the fridge for long enough for you to transport them to your holiday destination; just make sure you pop them back in the fridge when you arrive.  If you’re not going to have access to a fridge however whilst you’re away, we recommend taking a probiotic supplement containing saccharomyces boulardii with you as an alternative.  Saccharomyces boulardii is a non-pathogenic yeast which has been shown to support a healthy balance of flora.  This doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge and is a great solution for gastrointestinal support whilst traveling.

I’m worried about travellers diarrhea – is there anything I can take to help?

Saccharomyces boulardii is ideal to take away with you if you’re worried about travelers diarrhea.  It can be used to deal with an acute problem, or as a preventative if it’s something you’re concerned you could be exposed to whilst away.  It’s also useful for antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

 I often get constipated when I go on holiday – is there an easy way to deal with this?

Many people worry about a change in bowel habits when they go away.  Both traveler’s diarrhea and constipation are very common.  Some of the most common causes of constipation on holiday are a sudden change in diet, disruption of daily routine, jet lag and dehydration.  Making sure you continue to get enough fibre and plenty of water are important strategies to help prevent constipation, especially if you are traveling to a warmer climate.  In addition, a stick pack of pureed papaya is a useful support that travels well and doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge.  Several trials have found papaya helps to facilitate regular bowel movements and can be a particularly useful support on holiday.

Pain in the abdomen

I often suffer from indigestion when I eat out and am worried about this happening more often on holiday.  Is there anything natural that I can take to help?

Do You Need Silica?

Hair loss is a complex issue, and could easily be the subject of an entire book. We have an entire category populated with the products that may help here. But we’ll keep this simple. Women (and to a lesser degree, men) should always discount the possibility of iron deficiency, and supplement with iron if necessary. Note: please only supplement if you have been diagnosed with low levels of iron – don’t just guess – as iron is one of the rare minerals where if you take more than your body needs, it won’t just come out when you pee, and taking too much can be harmful.

Selenium can be found in shellfish, salmon, Brazil nuts, meat, eggs, grains, broccoli and onions, among many other natural whole foods.
However, selenium levels in these foods depend on the soil where the products were grown, or where the animals grazed. Lower levels of selenium in the ground were associated with lower concentrations in the blood.
Compared to North America, selenium levels in the soil tend to be lower in many European countries.


Bones, Teeth and Gums
Osteoporosis is a common symptom of aging, caused by calcium being leached from the bones leaving them brittle and weak. Supplemental calcium on its own is not enough, other minerals are needed and silica can help the body repair brittle bones. The symptoms of osteoporosis are mainly seen in women after the menopause but the degenerative process occurs much earlier in life. Silica is a major component of hair as hair is almost as rich in silica as healthy bones. Silica helps to prevent baldness and stimulates healthier hair growth. A silica supplement can help revitalise hair by making it shinier and stronger.
As we get older, the amount of silica in the body becomes exhausted leading to brittle nails. Nails are complex protein structures that grow on average 4-5mm per month. When there is a mineral deficiency, the rate of growth slows down so the fingernails can be the first sign of a silica deficiency. The Terrain

The term “the terrain” was coined by French physiologist Claude Bernard in the 19th century, who used the term for the body’s internal environment. Since the body comprises mostly water, the terrain of the body is in essence an aqueous medium. This includes the blood, lymph and the fluids inside of and between the cells.

The state of the terrain is determined by four factors, namely: its acid/alkaline balance; its electric/magnetic charge; its level of poisoning and its nutritional status (including oxygenation).

The condition of the terrain is absolutely central to the balance between health and disease. We can easily understand the notion that unhealthy soil will yield unhealthy, disease ridden plants, while healthy soil will produce strong, healthy plants.

The same concept applies when we look at the terrain of the body: if it is balanced it will promote health and if it is unbalanced it will lead to disease.

An unbalanced terrain disrupts the normal functions of the body: the immune system is less active, enzymes, hormones and other chemical messengers do not function properly, the elimination of toxins is less effective, prostaglandins and other pro-inflammation chemicals accumulate, digestion becomes inadequate, etc.

The body struggles to maintain balance through its many mechanisms, but eventually fails when the level of disruption reaches a tipping point, especially when there is a lack of proper nutrition.

This is when a variety of symptoms may begin, such as headaches, recurring infections, skin problems, etc, depending on our individual susceptibility, types of toxins and deficiencies.

Most people then turn to chemical drugs to suppress the symptoms, like painkillers to numb the pain, cortisone creams, antihistamines, antibiotics, etc. These unnatural measures only fuel the fire by aggravating the levels of toxicity, acidity and the degree of disruption of normal functions. They afford only temporary relief, while worsening the underlying imbalances that led to the development of the symptoms in the first place.

Acid/alkaline imbalance causing disease is not a new concept. In 1933, Dr. William Howard Hay from New York published A New Health Era in which he maintains that all disease is caused by “self-poisoning” due to acid accumulation in the body.An overly acidic condition weakens the body and can become dangerous. Our body requires a slightly alkaline condition to function well. Blood, for example, needs to be 7.4 pH. A shift in blood pH of just 0.2 could result in death. Obviously, the body does not want to die so it is forced to borrow minerals (calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium) from vital organs and bones to neutralize the acid (possible cause of so much osteoporosis despite high dairy consumption?).

A condition of high acidity may go undetected for years, causing the body to suffer prolonged damage.
