We’ve always known that life brings us in contact with a staggering number of chemicals, some of which are potentially dangerous in high doses. But we’ve never had a clear understanding about how many of those chemicals are actually making their way into our bodies—until now.
The Environmental Working Group just released a first-of-its-kind report on the chemical carcinogens found in people’s bodies. After compiling biomarker data, which measures chemical levels in the blood, urine, breast milk, and hair, the EWG detected up to 420 different potential carcinogens.
What the report means for you
Now, before you freak out, it’s important to realize that just because these chemicals may be in your body, it doesn’t mean they’re actively causing cancer.
Though there is a clear link between chemicals and disease (the World Health Organization estimates that as many as 19 percent of cancers are caused by environmental factors), the toxicity of the chemicals, the duration of exposure, and the body’s genetics all play a huge role. And the EWG estimates that only nine of the more than 400 carcinogens found were measured at levels high enough to pose nontrivial cancer risks.
How to reduce your risk
Carcinogens are present in everything from industrial products and pesticides to more natural sources like food and water, so not even the most Howard Hughes-est of germophobes stands a chance of completely dodging them.
However, certain simple lifestyle tweaks can help reduce your risk of exposure. We reached out to hormone expert Dr. Sara Gottfried to get her take on some of the report’s most widely found carcinogens and snag some of her tips on how to keep them out of your body.
1. Heavy metals
Heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead were among the most frequently detected carcinogens in the report, found in 90 percent of the participants. Industrial workers are especially vulnerable to heavy metal exposure, but trace metals are also present in drinking water and certain seafood. Metal molecules can disrupt the endocrine system and bind to DNA to cause mutations.
Pesticides from industrial farms can sneak into food and water sources, and traces of them were found in one-third to two-thirds of those surveyed in the EWG study.
The EWG advises choosing organic produce whenever possible, especially if you’re shopping for these 12 pesticide-heavy fruit and veggie varieties, and Dr. Gottfried recommends investing in a water purification system to nix pesticide contaminants from your tap.
Phthalates are synthetic chemicals found in certain plastics, beauty products, and pesticides. Known hormone disruptors, they’ve been tied to metabolism, fertility, and reproductive health issues.
The EWG recommends steering clear of all personal care and cleaning products that have the word “fragrance” on the ingredients list, since they often contain phthalates. Dr. Gottfried says to avoid plastic products that have the “3” recycling code molded on the bottom, for they also likely contain the chemical.
4. Bisphenol A (BPA)
Bisphenol A is another chemical that’s found in household plastics like water bottles and food can linings. It can disrupt the endocrine system and has been linked toobesity, diabetes, and endometriosis.
The EWG recommends opting for fresh food over canned whenever possible and avoiding plastics marked with “PC” (for polycarbonate) or “7” recycling codes. Dr. Gottfried suggests adding more probiotic-rich foods like yogurt and tempeh to your diet, as they’ve been shown to facilitate the removal of BPA from the body in animal studies.
What the report could mean for the country
The EWG released the review to advance research about how carcinogens drive disease and educate the public about the pervasiveness of chemicals in modern life.
“We thought that would be really valuable for researchers to see where the gaps are, and we also thought it would be valuable for individuals to understand the incredible amount of carcinogens in the world, where they’re coming from, and the ways in which they can reduce exposures,” Curt DellaValle, the study’s senior scientist, explained to mindbodygreen.
DellaValle also underlined the importance of federal policy in spurring real chemical reform.
“When we stopped using lead in paint, we saw a drastic decrease in people who had the chemical in their system. When PCBs were banned in America, we also saw a decrease in the amount that was detected in people,” he said. “I think that shows that when we pass effective policies, we can see really dramatic reductions in our chemical exposures.”
President Obama’s recent Moonshot Initiative aims to find a cure to cancer—a cure that the EWG and its President Ken Cook think could start before diagnosis.
“We should focus on preventing cancer by preventing human exposure to these chemicals,” he said in the report’s press release.
Modern society has created a sad state for our over-processed livers. Tips For Doing a Liver Cleanse
Other liver cleanse foods not listed above are artichoke, asparagus, kale and brussel sprouts. Eating the foods listed above is a great way to keep your liver functioning properly. However, for the best results, you may want to do a liver cleanse.
Doing a liver cleanse at least twice a year will eliminate any foreign substances that may be trapped in your liver.
Hepasan is a liver, gall bladder and kidney flush. It is intended to be taken with organic apple juice.

But what is Diabetes?
After eating carbohydrates the body breaks them down into glucose. This is chased into the cells by a hormone produced in the pancreas called insulin. In a very simplistic way, diabetes means that the insulin receptors on the cells are unable to respond to the insulin and glucose is left circulating in the blood. Instead of creating stable blood sugar levels during food intake, glucose levels can fluctuate erratically, leading to sugar cravings and hunger.
The brain receives messages that it needs more food and this creates a vicious circle making it very hard for people even in a pre-diabetic state to lose and then maintain weight on their own. A very common body characteristic is fat around the middle, which can also increase the risk of other illnesses, such as heart disease, arthritis or depression.

Research (5), from Newcastle University has provided promising results on reversing type 2 diabetes, by reducing weight and therefore “reawakening” the insulin cells in the pancreas. This could give even more motivation to those with type 2 diabetes, wishing to avoid medication.

2. Ginger Detox Bath & Body Scrub
This super simple scrub recipe requires only fresh ginger, Epsom salts, and lemon, but it is powerful and will leave you with soft, silky skin!
Combine roughly chopped ginger and ½ cup Epsom salt in a food processor. Pulse a few times until the ginger is ground and combined. Add lemon juice and apply scrub before the detox bath.
For the detox bath – 2 cups Epsom salt, ¼ cup grated ginger and ¼ cup baking soda.

You can wipe out mold, smoke, dust, and other invisible health hazards that have been trapped in your home all winter. Here’s how:
Gas and fumes from cookers, stoves & ovens
With every meal that you cook, your kitchen gets polluted with a little bit of smoke, soot, and possibly carbon monoxide (if you own a gas stove or range).
Inhaling high levels of carbon monoxide in your home can be fatal; being exposed to even low levels can cause fatigue, headaches, disorientation, dizziness, nausea, and other flu-like symptoms.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 15,000 people go to the emergency room each year due to non-fatal CO poisoning.
Your Detox Duties:
Check your burners: If flames are yellow-tipped, that may mean your stove is releasing too much CO. Call your manufacturer to find out if your burners should be readjusted.
If you don’t have one already, install an exhaust hood vented to the outdoors.
If you do have an exhaust fan, clean it.

To put a stop to growth, you have to control the moisture level in your home.
Scrub grout with a mix of 1/4 cup liquid chlorine bleach and six cups water (use a stronger solution if necessary), and rinse. Remember to wear rubber gloves and keep the room well ventilated.
Clean both sides of rubber mats with the bleach solution above.
Put plastic shower curtains in the wash for five minutes on the gentle setting. If they’re mouldy, GHRI recommends adding 3/4 cup liquid chlorine bleach to the load.
Consider installing an exhaust fan that’s vented to the outside, if you don’t have one already. Ventilation is key to keeping bathrooms and kitchens dry and toxin-free.
Check cement walls (particularly near the floor, ceiling, and windows) and crawl spaces in the basement for mold. If you find patches, scrub them away with a stiff brush soaked in a solution of one cup liquid chlorine bleach and one gallon water. Do the same thing for painted walls.
Dust and dander
A buildup can cause flu like symptoms and respiratory problems.
Get your air conditioner ready for prime time. A well-maintained unit can help filter out some allergens — but if the filter, drip tray, or other parts are dirty, the AC may actually allow new allergens into the house. Have a central air system? Replace your filter at least every three months; if you have the electrostatic kind, clean it regularly.
If you have a humidifier and dehumidifier, clean them as well.
Vacuum upholstery: Vacuum mattresses, flip, and vacuum again. If there’s a musty smell, wipe surfaces with a solution of one cup rubbing alcohol and one cup warm water. Wipe again with water only and let the bed dry.

Apple Cider Vinegar– Another easy and effective remedy for Candida and parasites. Apple Cider Vinegar is high in B-vitamins and very nourishing to the body. It helps the body’s pH neutralize and improves digestion. It is well known for killing yeast and improving skin condition. Some people are leery of vinegar, as a fermented product, when they have a yeast infection. While some fermented products like beer and wine can feed yeast, Apple Cider Vinegar undergoes a much different fermentation process and produces a completely different reaction in the body. It tastes awful, but after taking it for a while, you will become more tolerant of the taste, and your body will start to crave it. Start with 1 tsp up to 3 times a day about 30 minutes before each meal (some people can’t handle it before breakfast!). If you handle this well, this dosage can be increased to a tablespoon.
Probiotics– Probiotics restore the helpful gut bacteria that is wiped out by yeast or parasites (or antibiotic or oral contraceptive use). Probiotics are necessary to restore proper intestinal flora, even after yeast and parasites have been removed. A high-quality probiotic supplement should be included, taken according to product instruction. Do not take probiotics within an hour of Apple Cider Vinegar or Diatomaceous Earth! You might also consider drinks like Kombucha and Water Kefir to help build up probiotic levels, or organic, whole, plain, full-fat yogurt.
Cinnamon– Cinnamon is a natural remedy for parasites and fungus. Take ½ tsp of a high-quality cinnamon powder in water up to three times a day.
Vitamin C– Besides being an excellent antioxidant and immune support, Vitamin C is helpful in yeast/parasite removal. If you have symptoms of yeast and parasites, take 5,000 mg (5 grams) per day spread out in 2-3 doses. Do not take vitamin C at the same time as calcium/magnesium as they will neutralize each other. Olive Oil– Also an anti-fungal that supports the removal of parasite and yeast waste. Add 1-2 TBSP or more to salads or veggies, or take supplementally.
Other Herbs are known to help with yeast and parasites: Oregano Oil, Thyme, Peppermint, Rosemary, Olive Leaf Extract and Grapefruit Seed Extract. If you have a severe case of yeast or parasites, consider using any of these potent herbs, but do your research first!
Sweat– As your body kills off parasites and yeast, their by-products must be removed from the body, along with the toxins that they might have bound themselves to. Some of these are best removed through the sweat glands, so let your body sweat by exercising, taking cayenne supplements and getting in hot tubs or saunas during the healing process.

Other Important Notes
Removing yeast and parasites is a difficult job for your body. During this process, it is highly important that you support your body as much as possible with regular exercise, good diet, adequate sleep, and limiting exposure to toxins.
Soaking in an Epsom salt bath (1/2 cup Epsom salts in hot bath water) will also help remove toxins from the skin. Drinking enough water will help flush die off toxins out faster, and adequate sleep will give the body enough time to regenerate.
During this time, it is also vitally important that you do not consume sugar or carbs, as this will make the process much slower and much more uncomfortable. Consuming enough raw vegetables during this time will also help keep your energy levels up and clean the body faster.
