Things you must know if you don’t have a gallbladder

Removal of the gallbladder is one of the most common surgeries performed in the west today.  Gallstones are incredibly common and they occur in 10 to 15 percent of the population.  The problem does tend to run in families.

Women are more likely to experience gallbladder problems than men and this is partly due to the effects of the female hormone oestrogen.

A gallbladder performs several important roles in your body:

 

Enables fat digestion

Enables absorption of fat soluble antioxidants and vitamins A, E, D and K

Assists the removal of cholesterol from your body

Assists the removal of toxins that have been broken down by the liver

Obviously you can survive without a gallbladder, but you are more prone to developing certain health problems.  In particular you are at greater risk of developing a fatty liver, experiencing indigestion and developing deficiencies of essential fatty acids and fat soluble nutrients

What happens when you don’t have a gallbladder?

Your liver continues to manufacture bile, but there is no longer a place to store it or concentrate it. Therefore bile continually slowly trickles into the intestines.  

If you eat a fatty meal, you will not be able to secrete a large enough amount of bile into your intestines, therefore the fat will be poorly digested.  This means many people experience diarrhoea, bloating, nausea or indigestion.

Not digesting fat well means you will not be able to digest essential fatty acids, including omega 3 and omega 6 fats.  

It also means you’ll have a hard time absorbing fat soluble vitamins such as vitamins D, E, A and K.  

A lot of the antioxidants in vegetables are fat soluble: lycopene, lutein and carotenoids are all fat soluble.  If you don’t produce adequate bile, you will not be adequately absorbing these lifesaving compounds from foods.  If you take any of the above mentioned nutrients in supplement form, without sufficient bile you will sadly not absorb them well.

Some common symptoms of poor fat digestion are dry, brittle hair; dry skin and premature aging of the skin; weak nails and painful joints. Essential fatty acids are important for optimal brain health, therefore low mood, anxiety, depression and impaired cognitive function are all possible manifestations of poor fat digestion.

How to have a healthy liver and good digestion without a gallbladder

First of all it’s important to realise that you developed a gallbladder problem in the first place because you had an unhealthy liver and a problem with your digestive system.  If your liver is not healthy, it will make poor quality bile.  The bile will be prone to forming sludge and stones.  Just removing the gallbladder doesn’t solve that problem, and in fact sludge and stones can form within the liver, compromising its function.

Here are some vital tips to follow:

Keep your intake of dairy products and grains to a minimum or avoid them altogether.  Dairy products (milk, cheese, ice-cream, yoghurt) worsen all cases of gallbladder disease, liver disease and they are very difficult to digest. Food intolerance is a common cause of gallbladder problems, and there is research that links gluten intolerance with gallstones.  A good reason to keep your intake of grains low is to reduce the risk of developing a fatty liver.  There is a great deal of helpful information in our book Save your Gallbladder, and what to do if you’ve already lost it.

Take an ox bile supplement.  This is the most important recommendation for people who have lost their gallbladder.  A lack of bile can produce symptoms such as bloating and indigestion after meals, light coloured stools, diarrhoea, fatigue after meals and nutrient deficiencies.  Taking a good quality ox bile supplement with each meal is wonderful for completely eliminating these symptoms in most individuals.

Take a Digestive Enzymes supplement. The majority of people who developed a gallbladder problem have suffered with poor digestion for many years. If your stomach and intestines are not in optimal health, they will not send signals to your gallbladder, telling it to contract properly. Irritable bowel syndrome, dysbiosis, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and Candida overgrowth are common in people with a gallbladder problem.

If you have had your gallbladder removed, you may continue to suffer symptoms due to those conditions. These digestive problems also cause insufficient digestive enzyme production. Taking digestive enzymes in supplement form helps to restore good digestive health and reduces symptoms of indigestion.

Eat some good fats and avoid the bad fats.  Your doctor may have recommended you follow a low fat diet after having your gallbladder removed.  This is not necessary and in fact it is harmful.  Your body desperately needs good fats and I recommend you include moderate quantities of extra virgin olive oil, avocados, coconut milk and oil, nuts and seeds in your diet.

You may need a vitamin D3 supplement.  People with compromised liver or digestive function are often vitamin D deficient.  Exposure of your skin to the sun’s UVB rays enables your body to manufacture vitamin D.  However, this process occurs in your liver and kidneys.  People with a sluggish liver often do not manufacture vitamin D adequately.  Therefore it’s a good idea to get a blood test and take a supplement.  5000 IU of vitamin D3 is a safe and effective dose for most people, but it’s best to be guided by your own doctor.

Include some bitter and sour foods in your diet.  They should help to improve your digestion and make it easier to tolerate good fats in your diet.  Suitable bitter and sour foods include lemons, limes, radicchio lettuce, chicory, endive and dandelion leaves.  These leaves are fairly easy to grow at home if you are lucky enough to have your own veggie patch.

Take a good quality liver tonic such as Livatone.  The herbs St Mary’s thistle, dandelion root and globe artichoke leaves all increase bile production and bile flow.  Taurine is an amino acid necessary for bile production.  This should help to make you feel more comfortable after a meal, and should reduce the risk of stones forming inside your liver.

Fasting is not a new method but our ancestors would say they did not have much of a choice. It was just part of life in Palaeolithic times when food was scarce and people did not have the means to store huge amounts of food. The community were dependent on the luck and expertise of their hunters and gatherers. In ancient times however, cleansing and detoxing became more acknowledged and valued. Our ancestors already used methods, such as water fasts, enemas or saunas to detoxify their bodies.

In the 21st century, we face very different challenges; environmental pollution has risen to such heights that the detoxification capabilities of our bodies are challenged even more than before. (1) It is also important to consider additional factors like smoking and drinking alcohol on a regular basis. It should not come as a surprise that the most common way to put extra strain on the body is to consume foods high in sugar and simple carbohydrates.

The detoxification pathways

The way the body works is very efficient, if we use the right foods to fuel it. We have several organs involved in continuous detoxification, such as the liver, the kidneys, the gut, the lungs and the lymphatic system. The main role is played by the liver, which creates water-soluble substances that can be easily excreted from the body.

 

This happens in two phases: in the first phase, compounds are prepared for elimination via chemical reactions that can often transform them into more harmful substances. This step prepares the liver for the second phase, (the conjugation pathway) where these toxic substances are bound to other chemicals that render them harmless and ready for excretion.

It is imperative to note that patients with chronic illnesses can be made to feel worse during fasting because of an increase in circulating toxins in the body. Medical and naturopathic supervision is highly recommended to support clients and to avoid any potentially dangerous reactions. (2) Pregnant women and individuals with liver, kidney or heart arrhythmias should not fast.

 

But what is Diabetes?


After eating carbohydrates the body breaks them down into glucose. This is chased into the cells by a hormone produced in the pancreas called insulin. In a very simplistic way, diabetes means that the insulin receptors on the cells are unable to respond to the insulin and glucose is left circulating in the blood. Instead of creating stable blood sugar levels during food intake, glucose levels can fluctuate erratically, leading to sugar cravings and hunger.

The brain receives messages that it needs more food and this creates a vicious circle making it very hard for people even in a pre-diabetic state to lose and then maintain weight on their own. A very common body characteristic is fat around the middle, which can also increase the risk of other illnesses, such as heart disease, arthritis or depression.

To improve the life of someone with diabetes, it’s important to break this cycle by taking the strain off the insulin-producing cells. Studies prove that diet and lifestyle intervention can improve glucose tolerance and insulin resistance. (3)

Calorie restriction, intermittent fasting and alternate day fasting all seem to be great methods and depending on the patient’s condition and willingness, they might even be able to reduce or completely remove the need for medication. (3, 4)

Research (5), from Newcastle University has provided promising results on reversing type 2 diabetes, by reducing weight and therefore “reawakening” the insulin cells in the pancreas. This could give even more motivation to those with type 2 diabetes, wishing to avoid medication.

Identifying the individual detoxification pathways and understanding the environmental and lifestyle factors is crucial, in order to give personalised nutritional support and to reduce symptoms associated with metabolic toxicity.

There is a great solution to getting rid of some of these toxins and that is – detox baths.

Detox Bath Benefits

One of the easiest and most relaxing ways to detox is through a detox bath.

Detox baths are so easy to prepare at home.

You can get all the benefits you’d find in an expensive spa at a fraction of the price and in the comfort of your own home.

Using essential oils, which provide antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory benefits, along with common household items like baking soda, Epsom salts and honey can help flush impurities from the body by allowing it to sweat out toxins.

Try these super detox bath recipes.

They will help your body get back into tip-top shape in no time.

Take about 40 minutes to an hour in a detox bath for best results.

The first 20 minutes will give your body time to remove toxins from your system while the last 20 to 40 minutes will allow you to absorb the minerals in the water and help you emerge from the bath feeling rejuvenated.

Make sure to use hot water — this will help you sweat out impurities.

Dry body brushing prior to bathing will help detox the lymphatic system.

 

Detox Bath Recipes 

 

  1. Back Pain Detox Bath

You will need Epsom salts, eucalyptus, rosemary & lavender essential oils, cinnamon, dried herbs and flowers.

Epsom salts are the staple of detox baths, they are also high in nourishing benefits.

Because of its high magnesium and sulphate contents, Epsom salts help relieve sore muscles and fight inflammation

Soak for 40mins to one hour, your body and mind will both thank you.

       

2. Ginger Detox Bath & Body Scrub

This super simple scrub recipe requires only fresh ginger, Epsom salts, and lemon, but it is powerful and will leave you with soft, silky skin!

Combine roughly chopped ginger and ½ cup Epsom salt in a food processor. Pulse a few times until the ginger is ground and combined. Add lemon juice and apply scrub before the detox bath.

For the detox bath – 2 cups Epsom salt, ¼ cup grated ginger and ¼ cup baking soda.

Add to hot water. The heat and the ginger will make you sweat and sweating is how the body eliminates toxins.

This detox bath will also help unclog your pores and relax the muscles.

Try sipping on ginger tea beforehand to really enhance the effects.

 

  1.   Lavender Soothing Detox Bath

Lavender oil is a great all-around essential oil. Its soothing fragrance helps relieve anxiety and stress, it can help lull you to sleep, and even improves eczema and psoriasis.

This lavender detox bath only requires three ingredients.

1 cup Epsom Salt, 1 cup Baking Soda, 10 drops of Lavender Essential oils.

Add to warm water, this detox bath will soothe and relax you.

My husband and I started out on Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem, two programs that provided us with meals to eat and a regimen to follow. He was an investor in both so I figured they were worth a shot. Despite eating all the unpleasant food they gave us neither option helped us substantially. Our clothes might have been slightly less snug from time to time, but I didn’t feel any better. From there we hopped from fad diet to fad diet, never truly finding the right plan for us.kathy-b-success-story

By 1998 the spare tire I was carrying around my waist began to truly bother me. It seemed to grow faster than ever when I decided to switch from beef to chicken, the so-called lower calorie healthy meat of the time. I soon became unable to wear my own wedding rings and lost flexibility in my wrists as well. In July of the same year, I heard about the Blood Type Diet and approached it with the healthy skepticism I had developed from my negative experiences with other programs. But despite my doubts, I jumped into the Eat Right 4 Your Type book with eagerness and hope.

I found out that I was a Type B non-secretor and followed the guidelines for that type immediately. After two weeks of strictly following the diet, I lost a whopping five inches off the spare tire that had been plaguing me. I was hooked on the wonderful feeling and was thrilled to share it with my husband. But before I had the opportunity, he was pronounced dead on the eighteenth hole of a golf course during the middle of a match.

He was resuscitated in the ambulance and had to be constantly worked on at the hospital by a slew of doctors when he arrived. After six bypasses, the addition of a defibrillator and forty days in the hospital, he finally regained some semblance of health. During his trials I stayed by his side, constantly reading the Eat Right 4 Your Type book in the meantime. I studied every detail and continued to follow the diet during his struggle for survival. Despite the stress of the situation, I had energy and felt healthy because of the diet.

When we got home after the forty-day struggle, I put my ailing husband on the Blood Type Diet as well. Since he was Type A, I made sure to only give him the foods that were best for him and the changes in his overall wellness that followed were outstanding. The first check-in with the doctors evoked the same shock from each one who saw him. They said unanimously, “I cannot believe how good these tests look.”

Though my husband only lived for 5 more years after the incident, each and every moment after his collapse on the course was a gift. The Blood Type Diet not only prolonged his time on this Earth but added so much to his quality of life as well. He was able to play golf again, travel all over the world with me, and enjoy himself because of it.

My journey with the Blood Type Diet still hasn’t stopped. I continue to explore the depths of my own body’s chemistry by exploring the genotyping that Dr. Peter D’Adamo suggests for people who strive for an even more personalized look at their health. I’ve been passing the knowledge to everyone around me as well. While selling vitamins for a corporation in 1999, myself and the people working there ran experiments that tested some of the “Avoid” and “Beneficial” foods for each type. While on beneficial, everyone lost weight. After three weeks of eating only avoid foods the people who participated gained significant weight and felt horribly sluggish. These moments proved to me beyond the shadow of a doubt that you can truly harm your body by eating the wrong foods.

At this point of my life, I am healthy, vibrant and happy. My family, including my grandchildren and even my great-grandson all follow the diet to a “T” and all share the same vitality. I can’t thank Dr. D’Adamo enough for all he has done for me personally and those around me. I will continue to share the benefits of this program so even more people can see the startlingly positive results I have.
